Intervention strategies for literacy and mathematics

Ref: 2602
Can you outline all intervention programmes for KS1 and KS2? We link to lists from local authorities that identify and explain the various support strategies available for supporting primary pupils in literacy and mathematics.

Identifying pupils for intervention

Effective support for literacy and mathematics are organised into three ‘waves’ of intervention

Effective support for literacy and mathematics is organised into three ‘waves’ of intervention.

  • Wave 1: inclusion of all pupils in high quality lessons through differentiation
  • Wave 2: small group intervention, designed to supplement lessons for pupils working just below age-related expectations
  • Wave 3: one-to-one targeted intervention for pupils working well below age-related expectations

Lancashire County Council uses a flow chart to help teachers to identify pupils who may need wave 2 or wave 3 interventions.

Intervention programmes: literacy and mathematics

‘Support for children experiencing difficulties in literacy or mathematics’ (see link above) provides an overview of English and maths interventions. These are also laid out in grid format, identifying the year groups and organisation involved in each intervention.

Literacy intervention strategies

Wave 2 literacy

There are four main wave 2 literacy interventions. They are aimed at different year groups and involve groups of children working with an adult in a ‘booster class’.

Wave 3 literacy

There are various interventions to support pupils in literacy on a one-to-one basis. Hertfordshire Grid for Learning (HGfL) outlines the following:

HGfL has produced a grid that sets out recommended wave 3 interventions and the aspects of literacy they support.

Gloucestershire County Council has produced a list of links to wave 3 programmes, research, advice and government strategies on literacy intervention.

Camden Grid for Learning (CGfL) lists a range of intervention strategies for wave 3 literacy. An overview of each intervention, the age group concerned and the person delivering the programme is given.

Age-appropriate interventions

CGfL has outlined Key Stage 1 specific literacy interventions (wave 2 and 3).

Mathematics intervention strategies

Wave 2 mathematics

Support materials for Wave 2 maths include 'springboard materials' for years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The materials focus on number; they connect to additional sessions for groups of children in Key Stage 2.

Wave 3 mathematics

CGfL has a list of resources for wave 3 intervention. The resources are aimed at reception and years  2, 4 and 6. They provide session plans for one-to-one tuition.

Recent intervention strategies

Page 69 of the Children’s Plan outlines three new intervention strategies that aim to offer one-to-one support for pupils in reading, writing and number work.

Every Child a Reader

Supporting children with poor reading skills, this strategy is due to be rolled out nationally by 2010-2011.

Every Child a Writer

This strategy aims to help children to express themselves in writing. It is still under development.

Every Child Counts

Aimed at children aged six who are working below expected levels for their age, this strategy focuses on number work. It is due to be rolled out nationally by 2010.

These three strategies are explored in a Teachers TV video.
