‘I can’ statements for subject-specific skills at KS1 and KS2

Where can I find a list of curriculum skills as 'I can' statements? This article links to a range of 'I can' statements for Key Stages 1 and 2, organised by subject. It also links to guidance on developing and writing curricular targets for individual pupils.

Here we link to examples of 'I can' statements for individual subjects at Key Stages 1 and 2 (KS1 and KS2).

Art

Teacher resources on Mr Jennings' Pages for Teachers and Pupils include 'I can' statements for art. The statements are organised as steps under various skills.

Design and technology (D&T)

Kent County Council has published 'I can' statements for D&T. They are organised according to level.

English

Lancashire Grid for Learning (LGfL) has published a list of 'I can' statements for reading and writing. Both cover levels up to 5.

Herefordshire Council has ‘I can’ statements that cover various writing strands of the English curriculum.

History

Kingsdown School has published a series of 'I can' statements organised under the titles: chronology, knowledge, causation, and use of sources.

ICT

Kent County Council lists a selection of 'I can' statements for KS1 and KS2.

One practitioner has shared 'I can' statements for ICT on the Times Educational Supplement (TES) website. The statements cover reception to year 2.

Maths

The Lancashire Grid for Learning (LGfL) has 'I can' statements for maths that are organised by year group.

Modern foreign languages

Asset Languages lists 'I can' statements for listening, speaking, reading and writing. The statements are applicable to any modern foreign language.

Music

A resource published on the Teaching Music website sets out ‘I can’ statements for music for levels 1 to 8.

The TES website also publishes a resource that outlines statements for each level. The statements may be converted into 'I can' statements.

Music for Teachers has produced a list of levelled statements, organised by skill.

Physical education (PE)

One practitioner has shared 'I can' statements for PE on the TES website. The statements cover athletics, dance, gymnastics and games, and are organised according to levels.

PSHE and SEAL

While we were unable to find 'I can' statements for PSHE, we did locate some examples of statements for social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL). To access this resource, you will need to register on the TES website.

Religious education (RE)

'I can' statements for RE from City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council cover all eight levels and both attainment targets.

Croydon Council sets out 'I can' statements for the P scales, as well as most of the NC levels (levels 4 and 5 are missed out).

RE Online hosts a family of sites aimed at promoting RE resources on the internet. The link below takes you to 'I can' statements for all eight levels on the Better RE site. Scroll down to find the 'Can-do grid on screen' link.

Science

Northumberland Grid for Learning has published a range of assessment materials for KS1 and 2 science, including 'I can' statement grids. At KS2 these cover:

  • Planning
  • Obtaining and presenting evidence
  • Considering evidence and evaluating
