Asking your first question

Hundreds of school leaders are already using The Key. All published answers have been developed in direct response to questions from colleagues around the country.

Here's what other school leaders have asked as their first questions:

  • Can NQTs be used to cover lessons for absent staff?

We consulted a local authority and two unions to check the guidance and provided a one-paragraph response summarising the principles to follow.

  • Can a school become an academy if it is already successful?

We found a definitive response from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. We also found recent ministerial statements and provided very short case studies of successful schools that have become academies.

  • What are other schools doing on formative assessment?

We searched for case studies of successful practice and provided a brief overview of how three schools are using the latest research to develop assessment for learning. We also provided the principles direct from the QCA and the Standards Site.

  • How should I manage an outbreak of headlice in my school?

We provided up-to-date medical information, an example of an alternative remedy, a sample letter for the head to send home to parents and a strategy to avoid creating alarm within the school.
